Johnson matches idol in winning Guymon
GUYMON, Okla. – Texas County, Okla., prides itself on being the Saddle Bronc Riding Capital of the World.
After four grueling performances of the Guymon Pioneer Days Rodeo in the county seat, Chet Johnson got to see just why. The Gillette, Wyo., saddle bronc rider handled Pearl Jam for 87 points over the weekend and matched his rodeo idol, legendary Billy Etbauer, in winning the event.
“It’s a dream come true for me to compete against Billy, much less to split a big rodeo like this one with him,” said Johnson, 27, a two-time qualifier to the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo. “I grew up watching him and seeing how great he is, so this is a big deal to me.”
Etbauer, 45, added $5,117 to his earnings and extended his lead in the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association’s saddle bronc riding world standings. The five-time world champion has earned $76,051 on the young season. Johnson, who was 13th in the standings before the Guymon event, has now earned $23,343 and should move into the top 10.
“They key to making a living in rodeo is to finish the year in the top 15 and make the finals,” Johnson said. “Winning this rodeo is a big deal to me for a lot of reasons, and it’s one step closer to making it to the NFR.”
Other winners were Jerad Schlegal, bareback riding, 87 points on Dirty Jacket, $5,194; Randy Maverick, bull riding, 89 points on Air Up, $5,643; Luke Branquinho, steer wrestling, $8,643; Chance Kelton and Boogie Ray, team roping, $4,253 each; Shane Hanchey, tie down roping, $5,308; Tammy Key-Fischer, barrel racing, $4,326; and J.D.
