Foyil works through the chill to lead bareback riding

GUYMON, Okla. – The wind blew and the chill filled the air at Henry C. Hitch Pioneer Arena on Friday night during the first performance of the Guymon Pioneer Days Rodeo.

But the action was hot.

Dennis Foyil of Guthrie, Okla., opened the competition by firing off an 82-point ride on the horse Step Mom for the best score in bareback riding. He takes the lead in the one-round event as he awaits the results from the final three performances of competition, which take place at 2 and 7:30 p.m. Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday.

“I wanted to put on a good spur ride, and I feel like I did that,” said Foyil, a former Prairie Circuit bareback riding champion.

Foyil’s spurs zinged as he matched moves with the powerful horse as it bounded across the large arena. Foyil holds a one-point lead over Scotty Drennan of Buffalo, Texas.

Foyil wasn’t the only Oklahoman to put on a show in Guymon on Friday. Trell Etbauer from the Panhandle burg of Goodwell handled the horse Teddy Bear for 81 points to take the early lead in saddle bronc riding.

Luke Branquinho, the 2004 steer wrestling world champion, continued his blistering pace with a 3.4-second run to take the third-round lead. He tied for first in the opening round with a 3.7, then had another 3.7 in the second round to finish seventh. He holds a strong lead in the all-important aggregate race.
