Jones finds a home in Oklahoma Panhandle
GUYMON, Okla. – K.C. Jones grew up in the plains of eastern Colorado.
It’s no stretch, then, that the Decatur, Texas, cowboy found the confines of Henry C. Hitch Arena quite comfortable on Saturday night. His 3.7-second run was the fastest of the third performance of the Guymon Pioneer Days Rodeo and puts him in prime position for a big paycheck heading into Sunday’s final performance.
Jones was raised in Las Animas, Colo., a mere three-hour drive from the Oklahoma Panhandle’s largest community and biggest host to rodeo’s best come each May. His performance on Saturday night placed him No. 2 in the go-round behind 2004 world champion Luke Branquinho.
Jones is also sixth in the all-important aggregate race after posting 14.8 seconds on three runs. Branqinho is dominating the field with 10.9 seconds on three runs, two seconds faster than his nearest competitor, Baillie Milan.
Eight-time world champion Trevor Brazile of Decatur also secured himself into more big paydays in Guymon by posting an 11.1-second run in steer roping. Brazile – who owns five all-around world titles, two steer-roping titles and a tie-down roping championship – moved to No. 1 in the aggregate race and is third in the fifth go-round.
